I've got a 96 Cherokee SE 4.0. On two separate occasions, separated by a few weeks, the vehicle from a standing stop had a hard time getting off the line. It was very slow to move even though I had the engine up to 2000 RPM. The vehicle had been running around town fine before instances and only happened after driving a while. After getting the vehicle home, it was left overnight and ran fine after that, no problems whatsoever.

After the first time, I did notice a rich running smell that continues to be there. The check engine light has not come on at all.

I had the transmission fluid changed about 18 months ago and that was probably no more than 10K miles ago. The vehicle has about 112K on it now.

Any thoughts? I've been thinking it could be something floating around inside the transmission and getting stuck in the valve body. I also considered that it may be an engine sensor going bad and sending out a bad signal.

 

It sounds more electrical than mechanical,it could be your tcu or tps,I had something similar to that the other day,would slip in 4th gear,but has not returned.
