Default 96 Aussie Jeep XJ Crank No Start

Righto....here we go....

A mate of mine has acquired this 96 model RHD Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L 4 speed auto. It was sold to him in a non running condition with notes of a crap fuel pump and he had it towed to my house. Yay.
So I have gone through a few things as it's a tidy car, only 140,000 of the finest miles on the clock and "classic" written on the side of it.

It cranks happily, but won't fire. I pugged in my OBD2 reader and it won't engage in comms with this car. So I figured I'd use the engine light flashes......no engine light showing at all. No tacho move on cranking either.

We pulled the fuel tank (and probably got pink eye from all the dirt under there) and learned this one is a side mount pump while I had ordered a replacement top mount pump. "SH*T".
Anyway, I bench tested the pump and its working happily and looks like its been replaced with good nick fuel hoses, new filter by the looks of things, and we don't get any underbody rust in this country so everything looks fine under there. We put the pump and tank back in.

There is plently of fuel pressure at the rail, and I tried jumping the ASD relay or swapping it, I've had a look at all the fuses and they seem ok. I have pulled the earth points on the block and under the ecu, cleaned and reinstalled. There is no C101 plug on this car to check or clean. no change. No start.

Next step was the throw a new Crank angle sensor on, and try again. No change. No start. The injectors are refusing to fire.

Without a code I am kinda flying blind and I don't really want to play Parts Darts with this thing... so I am asking this community what the known weak spots in these vehicles are that I can cross off to narrow it down and get it going.

Side note, this car seems to be a hybrid of all the parts too. I've had plenty of parts recommended to me that are simply wrong or for later or earlier ones. It seems this car was a parts bin special or a Friday Factory Car.

Thanks,
Mike.

Pretty sure '96 was a one-off with the rail configuration, you might be getting pressure but I can't recall if the regulator is on the rail or in the tank? You will find that 96 did a heap of weird things it's so much fun...

yeah mate you’re not wrong!! I ordered 2 different crank angle sensors as both said fitment guaranteed for this car.

some further research and testing indicated that the fuel pump prime circuit wasn’t active. The fuel pump would come on and stay on when the ignition was switched.

The ecu was putting out a 5v circuit to each of the various sensors so a dead ecu capacitor was confirmed as a the cause. I opened the ecu and yeah, it’s leaked out everywhere. Apparently this is also incredibly common as it’s $1500 for a refurb one. Prices don’t get this high without demand.

seems a lot of the local parts cars are also having the exact same issue too. The price we pay for a hot country I suppose

Is it this one?

I got a bunch if you want a few (you may have 25V but these are better). LMK.

Although this gives me confusion:

as all the major sensors run on 5 volts.
