Hey so I had a little problem with my 96 xj with a 4.0 ho it backfired twice while I was going down the road and shut off I got it back to my house and I can not get it started back up it cranks and i don’t hear any loud noises . I also after the problem happened I assumed it was a fuel issue so I replaced the fuel pump and filter but I’m still having issues if anyone has some incite or can lead me in the right direction would be awesome, I just checked all my fuses and relays they were all good and swapped all my spark plug wires bust still same story crank no start

 

What do you mean fuel pump blew up?

 

here is what you need to do.

1) Does the fuel pump whir for 3 secs when key is switched to "on"
2) upon depressing the Schrader valve pin with a screwdriver tip, does fuel spray out after cranking

If yes, you probably have fuel, if No, you do not have an operational fuel pump (for whatever reason)

3) check for spark using a spark tester, or screwdriver resting 1/8" from engine metal

Its usually either lack of spark, or lack of fuel supply

 

(update it’s still not running I’ve swapped my distributor and it’ll crank over but no fire checked timing and it was still in time) getting clear strong spark from the igniter and nothing, im kinda at a loss no loud noises when cranking over and no sparkles in the oil

 

When you say igniter...you mean spark plug?...then its fuel. What is your fuel pressure at the rail? Have you tried starting fluid to see if it catches for a few seconds?

 

Ignition coil I’ve always called it a igniter and I’ve tried ether but it won’t still won’t fire

 

You need to be specific ...you have spark at the coil output...what about the end of the spark plug where it counts. You still have not told us fuel pressure at rail
