Okay i have a 1995 jeep cherokee 4x4 automatic. My original engine spun the bearings so i swung a 1995 jeep cherokee engine into my jeep same, same year and everything plugged and played. I reused my transmission, torque converter, and t-case. Keep in might i did not separate any of these components. I pulled it all out together torque-converter was never moved. I reinstalled everything and it ran and drove fine. I drove the jeep up a hill and the engine reved high but i wasnt going anywhere. keep in mind i did not touch anything and it was shifting fine, always has since i bought it. I stopped and tried manually shifting but the jeep revs but will not move at all.
All that said here is what ive checked
Lube is perfect
Transfer case is in 2hi i removed linkage and engaged it by hand.
Torque converter is bolted to flex plate, bolts are tight
I checked fuse for auto trans its good
I reset shift linkage it is good
WHAT AM I MISSING I NEED TROUBLESHOOTING ADVISE. By the way there is no grinding, whatsoever, when i shift from park to gears the engine revs as it should but still will not move

I can't really comment on anything to try but if you like a bit of reading, here's the PDF for the AW4: http://shop.ukrtrans.biz/wp-content/...talogs/AW4.pdf
It does have troubleshooting steps which you may be able to go through.

Is the throttle body to transmission cable (often incorrectly called a kickdown cable) attached and adjusted correctly? Transmission cooler lines not pinched or anything? I'm just trying to think what would have been touched during an engine swap.

Do you have a helper?
Can you have the helper shift the transmission, while you crawl underneath the vehicle & check the linkage moving on the transmission?
Can you shift the linkage on the the transmission by hand? Can you feel the transmission shift gears when the linkage is being moved?

the shifter cable attaches to the engine block, (or bellhousing) with a bracket...to a plastic fitting on the cable itself.Originally Posted by lawsoncl

This can fail, and the the cable will not move the shifter..its not that obvious either. The plastic bit is supposed to hold the cable in place, or release it if a new cable is needed
I wired a busted one to the bracket, has to be held tight in there
agree that an assistant is handy, jack rear end for safety, bad trans usually whines a bit
disconnect the TCM fuse or harness, see if it responds to manual shifting
test for pressure at port
