Default 95 engine block replacement

Hey everyone having a bit of an issue hoping someone can help. First off I am new to Jeeps and not a great mechanic but do ok with youtube help. So I acquired a 95 Cherokee with a hole in the block from a busted piston. I got a good deal on a 98 Grand Cherokee engine (which I was told a direct swap, but I was completely misinformed). The block mounted but none of the other stuff fit like intake or any of the belt drive parts pumps pullies ect. It was a bad swap as my paid mechanic at the time turned out to be an idiot and I myself ended up finishing the swap.

Long story short the distributor isn't the same either so gladly parts were left behind so I was able to use the old hall effect and cap(wire connectors were different) The Jeep will fire for 3-5 seconds then cut off and sounds like it is sucking air. I believe I have narrowed it down to distributor/timing but no clue on how to fix it. The 98 distributor is in the engine and old engine is long gone. Can this be as simple as getting a correct year distributor setup or does that 98 have different "splines", do I need the 98 setup and cut/splice the wires to 95 connector, or did I just botch this and actually need a correct block that is a direct fit for a 95??
