Default 95 Cherokee Running Issues NEED HELP

Hey guys. I read some of the other similar threads about not running unless the key is held in the start position, but mine has a new twist. I read everything from ballast resistor to ignition switch and wanted to get all your take before I start throwing money at it

I have a 1995 XJ 4.0 4x4. From the day I bought the Jeep after starting I would have to jiggle the key to get the Accessories to come on. IE no wipers, radio, heater until i jiggled the key; in the run position; till i would see the radio faceplate come on. HAs been like this for 2 years and never had an issue.

Starting a few weeks ago I had trouble when it was super cold out. I thought it was fuel line freeze, but could always get it going with enough effort. Now that it is warmed up and it was still doing it I was confused.

Now I have come to find that if I turn the key to start and hold it, it runs just fine... doesnt miss at all. But the moment i release the key to the run position it dies immediately. Here is the odd part; If I turn it to start, hold it there and then jiggle the key until the radio comes on then release to run it stays running.

My though is the key switch is bad. I can move the key 3/4 of an inch in and out with the Jeep in the run position and the fact that I have had to jiggle it for two years is a good sign. However I am a poor college kid and the part is 62 bucks at Auto Zone so I cant just guess.

Please.. Input needed

So would you agree it sounds like the ignition cylinder going bad? I assume that's what you mean; not the actual ignition module down below on the column.

I'll bet lunch that your thought is correct. The actual switch is mounted a ways down the steering column, connected by a rod up to the key cylinder. You need to change the switch itself. Check the plug too, they've been known to overheat.
If you are really on a budget a scrapyard switch is OK, check the connector and pins for signs of discoloration from heat.

It was in fact the ignition switch. I pulled the lock cylinder out and put it in the new one. Put it all back together and she fired right up. Although there is still slop in the lock cylinder itself, it didnt seem to affect it. No more jiggling the key to get the radio on either

Thanks guys.
