'94 XJ, Gear oil everywhere...
Hey guys,
Rookie here so I'm not sure if I'm overreacting but here it goes...
Last week I put a G2 rear differential cover on replacing the stock diff cover in preparation for the inevitable lift, anyway I did the usual, drained the old oil, put the new cover on, then filled up my diff up to the fill plug...Anyway, later I notice tons of gear oil dripping out of the frame, its coming from the rear differential vent for sure, specifically from that little plastic breather...
Anyway it looks like I lost a lot of oil, I've been researching my problem and apparently it happens if you overfill with gear oil, I'm just worried I'll burn up my rear end assuming that the problem will fix itself as the oil drains back to a normal level. Has anyone else had this problem before?
Thanks for any help

The G2 covers have a higher capacity for oil, so it is more full than before .. The breather is doing its job and getting the correct amount. You'll be fine as long as it's only coming out of the breather and not leaking around the cover.

When using aftermarket differential covers, you need to fill to the correct level regardless of where the fill plug is. Sounds like you have WAY too much fluid in there. Personally I'd drain it and refill to the proper level.

This is true, I run aftermarket covers also and I fill mine till its to the bottom of where I can put my finger in and down inside. ........Or as suggested just run the amount that's called for in the manual then add just a little more for the extra volume of the cover, whatever yours may be.
Just don't overfill!

The reason they put the plug so high is so if you are running a really steep pinion angle you can still get the proper amount of fluid in the diff.
