you can swap fuel injectors between a 1996 and 1994 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L, but there are a few key differences to keep in mind:
🔧 Compatibility Overview
• Engine Block & Head: Both years use the same 4.0L inline-six engine, so the injectors physically fit the intake manifold and fuel rail.
• Fuel Rail & Connectors:
• 1994 Cherokee: Uses OBD-I electronics with EV1-style connectors and a return-style fuel system.
• 1996 Cherokee: Uses OBD-II electronics, also with EV1 connectors, but the fuel rail has quick-disconnect fittings that require a special tool to remove.
✅ What Works
• The injectors themselves are interchangeable if:
• You match the electrical connectors (EV1 in both cases — so you're good there).
• You use injectors with similar flow rates (usually around 23.2 lb/hr for stock 4.0L injectors).
• You install new O-rings and clean the injector seats properly.
⚠️ What to Watch Out For
• Fuel Pressure Differences: The 1996 system may run slightly higher pressure due to emissions tuning. If you're using 1996 injectors in a 1994, make sure they’re not oversized or from a performance variant.
• Injector Part Numbers: Double-check the Bosch or OEM part numbers to confirm flow rate and spray pattern. Some 1996 injectors have a 4-hole spray tip for better atomization — which can improve idle and throttle response in older engines.
🛠️ Pro Tip
If you're already pulling the rail, consider upgrading to rebuilt 4-hole injectors from a compatible donor (like early Dodge Neons or Ford 5.0s) — many Cherokee owners report smoother idle and better MPG with those.
