Default 94 HO with power/comfort switch for trans

After reading here about the switch and how it was taken away after -91 I have a question about the relation engine vs. trans.

My 94 HO has the switch (and it works), have always kept it on comfort but now I'm starting to think that it might hurt the transmission using comfort with the HO engine. Also looking for a bit better MPG (getting 17-20 MPG city/hiway) but it's mostly the trans I'm concered about.

Anyone else with the switch or any comments?

Leave it in Power mode. Neither selection wil hurt your AW4, and the HO only has 8 more horsepower than the most powerful Renix, and that's all at higher RPM.

Thanks Cruiser54, will do.
Wonder why my jeep has that switch at -94, frankenjeep or just random?

It just changes the shift pattern. The trans is made to handle either option with no ill effect.

Ok, my reasoning for asking was that I read something about the trans slipping in comfort mode and therefor could ruin the trans a bitter quicker, but I'm still a rookie when it comes to jeeps.

I'm not sure which year they got rid of it. Perhaps some other owners will chime in.

I had the switch on my '91 and always kept it on power cause there was a diference in what RPM the trans shifted. The AW-4 is a beast though and I wouldnt worry about the switch hurting it.

I call it the "power/economy" switch!

I get at least 2 more mpg on my 90 RENIX with the switch in comfort. With the switch in comfort the TC locks up at a lower mph in 3rd and will drop into and hold OD at a lower speed as well. I would guess in theory this could cause more wear but I doubt the AW4 really cares until it gets to the 300k milestone.

I ran into a XJ'er the other day that was well over 400k on his 89, 4.0, AW4, NP231, D-35 XJ. All original, just routine maintenance. It was rough on the outside but was running really well.

better mileage in power anyways.

and your jeep either spent it's original years in canada, or mexico. that switch was available/standard in either location through 94.

Where is this switch located? Would it be on an 01?

91 was the last year of the P/C switch. All models after that were wired from the factory in the power mode.

This was noted in post 1

My '89 has it too, but it doesn't work. Any ideas on that?

^ Dont worry about it, you dont need it anyway.
If anything, hard wire it to power and use the switch for something else.

I'll probably try and see if there is a difference between power/comfort in fuel consumption on mine, would be nice if I could get JeepCoMJ's results with more power and better mileage.

Ah, that makes sense, my Jeep was imported to the middle east and has since it's sandy years travelled north, way north.

That's really tempting, any ideas on what to put on the switch?
