have you cleaned the throttle body? I've read this can cause an issue similar to yours although not exactly the same. Since you seem to be out of ideas I figured I'd throw that one out there. I found a video on youtube not too long ago with instructions on how to properly clean it. I can dig it up if you'd like. It was pretty thorough.

The throttle body was pretty gunked up. I sprayed the crap out of it with brake cleaner. I know that's not completely thorough but it looks a lot better. This was one of the first things i did.

I wanted let everyone know where I was with my cherokee. After various searches on the forums, I found someone that suggested either the ignition coil or the crankshaft position sensor. He suggested spraying water on it when the jeep was acting up to cool the part down and see what happened. Well this sounded kinda weird to me but it was an easy check so I decided to try it. I took the jeep for a ride until it started running rough, got it home and used the garden hose to spray water down on the cankshaft position sensor. In about 5-10 seconds , holy crap the engine settled down and ran great. I did this three more times and it worked every time. So I have changed the crankshaft position sensor and put about 60 miles on the jeep without a single glitch!! thanks everyone here for your help and suggestions.
