94 cherokee Fuel pump not priming/working. Gas gauge works.
Please help! I have a 94 jeep cherokee 4.0 2wd and I'm having some problems with the fuel pump.
First of all, when i got it the fuel guage did not work but it ran fine. I got high centered and busted the wires going to the old fuel pump and had to buy a new one. Changed it out no problem and now my fuel gauge is working but the pump does not come on. Tried a new relay and still nothing.
Can anyone help?!

As you are checking the power to the pump, keep in mind that it goes through that ceramic resistor on the inner fender near the air cleaner.
Power from the rear of that goes straight to the pump. The resistor is there mostly just to quiet the pump some, it can be eliminated/bypassed.
Welcome to the forum! POS? My 90 is getten close to 300K, and clearing 20 MPG on the highway. You must mean "Piece Of Sunshine?"

My 94 cherokee has 98k on it and it's a good ride, just frustrates me trying to track down problems. previous owner beat the crap out of it so now it's on me to fix. I will jump the fuel pump straight from the battery to make sure it's not faulty then go from there.
Is there a reset switch or something that may cause the new one to not work? Granted we had to tug it pretty hard to get it unstuck but it ran for about 2 minutes before dying.

ok so after looking for that resistor I did some more research and apparently after 93 they stopped putting them in. The gauge works, so its not a ground. Im starting to think ive just got a faulty pump.

Woops! Sorry. I knew they changed in 94.....Hope I didn't waste too much of your time. (and thanks for gettn me on the dot).
Although the gauge is there, as far as far as I know they are on different circuits. Maybe they share a ground though. Was me I'd be tracing it back. See if there is power and ground at the pump first, then if not work back. I don't like those crimp deals. I normally slide shrink tube on before soldering so I can slide it back after. I'd use a wire nut before a crimp connector.
Do you hear it run? It comes on just a couple seconds after you turn the key on, then again cranking/running.
If you DO hear it running and still don't have fuel, there might be a problem with the tube from the pump inside the tank.
Those cube relays can be swapped. For instance you could put the AC clutch relay in the fuel pump hole. They don't seem to fail often, but just cleaning and moving it might help if there is a bad connection.
If you scroll down to the relay diagram in my signature, I'd guess it's the "87" terminal, that goes to the pump Pos. (your relay will be somewhere in the PDC under the hood)

holy hell so i checked and double checked the fuses and relays..so i thought. I do not know how i skipped over the IGNITION CONTROL fuse. apparenty when the vehicle is in a collision (or in my case we tugged the hell out of it getting it unstuck) it trips a sensor which blows the Ignition control fuse and this stops the fuel pump and cuts off fire to the plus to decrease the chances of a vehicle fire. replaced the fuse...runs fine. kicking myslef in the butt now. but im selling it so i'll have money to move out of state. 94 jeep 4.0 5 speed 99k miles. probably take 700 for it cause the cosmetics are a little rough but everything works.
