I have a 92 Jeep XJ 4.0L, cranks but no start. If I give it a shot of starting fluid it runs great, but as soon as I shut it of, it will not start without another shot of SF. Any ideas what might be causing this? I also have a check engine light on......Thanks

 

Need to get us a code that your xj is throwing, it will help us help you. Could be a few things and the code will help us narrow it down for you with out firing off the parts cannon

 

1. Pull codes and post the EXACT codes here (not a description). The procedure for pulling codes for an OBD1 system like you have in your 92 can easily be done yourself. See below.

2. Test your fuel pressure. Must be done with a gauge which can be rented inexpensively from many parts stores; call around for availability. For a 92, you need 31 psi to fire the engine. Then disconnect the vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator and the pressure should jump to around 39 psi. If there is raw fuel in that vacuum line, you have a ruptured fuel pressure regulator and it must be replaced. You have a fuel delivery issue of some sort; might be a weak fuel pump or a partially clogged fuel filter. When was the last time you changed the filter? If you don't know, do it. It's inexpensive, very easy to change out and should be considered basic maintenance no matter what.

RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES ON JEEP XJ OBD1 Models: 1991-1995

1) Start engine (if possible). Move transmission shift lever through all positions, ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on and then off (if equipped).

2) Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn ignition on, off, on, off and on within 5 seconds. Record 2-digit fault codes as displayed by flashing MIL.

3) For example, fault code 23 is displayed as flash, flash, 4-second pause, flash, flash, flash. After a slightly longer pause, other codes stored are displayed in numerical order. When MIL begins to flash fault codes, it cannot be stopped. Start over if count is lost.

NOTE: A "5-5" will always occur to signal the end of the sequence. Some will flash the "1-2" code indicating a recent battery disconnect even if you haven't done it. Ignore these two codes, and mark down all others.
