my 92 will run fine for hours at a time, then start acting like it's starving for fuel. it will pop and stall when i try to floor it. i can shut it off and let it sit for a hour or so then everything is fine for another hour or so. i only use the jeep off road, it's my camp vehicle. luckily it hasn't happened in a mud bog yet. going to change the fuel filter next trip to the camp. just wondering if it could be a fuel pump problem. i'll bet there's a couple inches of mud covering the filter. washed the outer mud off last trip, but never thought about the frame rail where the filter is. may have to chisel into it. any thoughts on other causes for this problem.

I think you're on the right track with the fuel issue. That's what I'd be looking at - pressure test, new filter, relay check, inspect vacuum line on the pressure regulator, etc.
Also check the ballast resistor on the front drivers fender is in good shape. You can bypass and eliminate it altogether if you want full voltage to the fuel pump. Also check Cruiser54's tip #29 for the ground at the fuel pump . http://cruiser54.com/?p=249
