92 cherokee fuel issue
Alright guys i bout this jeep for 200 bucks a few weeks back. i just want something i can wheel without feeling bad about tearing it up body panel wise. So far i put and alternator on it and belt, plugs wires and cap and rotor. changed the oil, trans fluid, and diffs, also scored some 31 x 10.50 tires.
right now i am having a fuel issue i do believe. I drained the gas and put new gas in, also new fuel filter. At idle i have about 22 psi, unplug the regulator and no change to pressure what so ever. as soon as you shut it off the pressure drops to 0 within 10 seconds. also when you turn the key to the on position the pump kicks on but pressure goes up to about 3 psi then right back down, if you keep cranking it you can get it to start and idle but again with pressure about 22 psi.
My question is do you guys think it is a fuel pump or regulator, or both.
also one more question
if you give it gas it cuts out and wants to die, i believe this to be because the low pressure, What do you think?
if you feather the throttle you can get it to rev up, you can hold it about 2 to 3 grand and it will idle up there and have good throttle response but still with low pressure around 25 psi.
any and all ideas or test procedures are greatly apprciated.

It definitely sounds like a fuel pump to me. Just did mine, after finding pressure loss when off and lower than normal running pressure. Made a huge difference and now I'm not worried about getting stranded! You'll probably want to replace the inlet filter sock on the pump assembly too when you do the pump. There are some good write-ups on here for the pump replacement, which list common issues with incorrect replacement parts too! Easier than I thought it would be, once I got that stupid lock ring off my tank. That part kinda hurt.

Check the fuel pressure coming into your filter. It should be over 31psi. If the pressure is good there and low on the rail your fuel filter is stoping up. You should check the filter first. But if it sat very long the fuel pump is probably bad... Thx-Ace
