91 xj paint issues...how should I go at it???
Hey all,
I have a 91 stock xj, that is now mine, and no longer a family car. I want to start with the paint, and need to know for sure how to go at it.
I am going to start with sanding just the hood using my palm sander and about a 180 grit. Followed by primer and flat black or spray on bed liner.
Here are a few pictures of what I will be dealing with....I am open to suggestions and knowledge of others.
Please let me know if I am way off track, if I need to do something else....anything.
Just looking for help.
Thanks in advance.

Prep prep prep! IMOP prep work is 80% of the work and will make or brake a paint job. Even a cheap one. I've made spray paint jobs look good cause of prep. I do a lot of wheeling so I wasn't gonna spend a lot of $ on paint that was just gonna get bashed up a dozen times a year.
After 3 days, I got it all sanded and primed...I feel it is turning out great!
I used a palm sander with 180 grit to get rid of the old paint, I then ended up putting 4 coats of DupliColor Primer using my harbor freight spray gun, each coat got a little thicker and I sanded with 500 grit in between coats 2 and 3. It feels nice, and I think it will be nice over all.
Now deciding what color to paint and how to go about it.

I've really been wanting to rattle can mine desert tan (flat of course) after I saw a thread with that done. I really liked the look of it. I just can't justify it right now because the paint is in pretty good shape. Looks like yours is coming out great. Good job and have fun.

Make sure to completly feather out all the crowsfeet so that it doesnt come back to haunt you. Also if your looking for something to spray that is tough try and find a good epoxy primer.

i rattled can mine after a few months, lot of people ask me how much i spent on the paint job, cause it came out pretty good.
took me about a 3 days for each section (1 day for sanding and 1 for painting and re-coating)
i used 80 220 and 400 grit outside of my garage in about 76 degree weather
i am thinking about going back one more time and light sanding it some more and adding more detail, but who knows
i still have yet to clear coat mine and dont know that i actually ever will. if it gets dinged up its easier to just fix it this way...
the water drops you see is from where i washed it down after it flash dried but is not a permanent thing
this is a picture before i finished it, so you can see what i started with, basically the same thing, fading and peeling paint
