Default 91 XJ Climate control is getting very hot

the climate control ( slider type) in my 91 XJ, in the center where the A/C switch is , gets very hot. I have changed the blower with a NEW one and it is still getting pretty warm. is this normal ? is it supposed to warm up a bit ? if it is not the blower doing it, what else could it be ? the low/med/high switch is not getting very warm at all with this new blower, but the slider switch is...any help would be fantastic, and let me say thanks in advance....

really no one has any idea about this, I ran the blower in the fan/vent only position and it still seems to get hot. the fuse in the floor melts also, something is pulling alot of current....any ideas ? anyone ? new blower didn't make a differance...could it be the climate control switch it self ? could the switch be bad and causing restance causing the heat build up ? anyone ever have this before ?

I would pull the heater control panel and check the wires and connection to make sure that the are not melting. They do tend to over heat and cause the connections to melt and cause thing to over heat. At least that is what I have found to happen to me. Give that a check and let us know what you find.

Here's what RTorrez1 is talking about.

The contacts on the control panel may be cooked as well.

Great post. That is exactly what I was talking about and what I found to cause my panel to heat up.

Great pics.
Since the OP posted this in June 2013, it would be pretty sturdy that things are still holding up if he ends up finding a similar thing on his...

Tuck these pics away for the next time you need them to help someone.

thanks guys, I did replace the fan switch and the connector was toasted, so I put on new terminal lugs and good insulating tape between the terminals. the fan switch is not getting hot at all, only the part of the climate control just above the slider switch, if I run the fan on low or only one click above the bottom, there is none to very little heat, but the higher speeds make it get real hot. the connector and an inch or two back on the harness ate also hot...one of you said maybe the contacts in the switch are bad ...might check that, I know when a switch gets corroded up it can cause resistance and that equels heat....might just have to find another climate control somewhere and see if that fix's it....thanks for the input and if anyone has any suggestions please post them, all comments are great !! thanks again

Default Still Hot

Well after months of looking at this, I decided to find a different slider switch assembly. installed it and the same thing happens, it get real hot. I ran a hot wire from the battery directly to the 12 volt input on the slider switch and also tied in the blower switch so both the slider switch and the blower switch have a direct voltage source and not going through the wire harness inside fuse block. the hot line going to the battery has a fuse in it so I have some protection should things go bad. same thing...even on vent ( A/C not running, only blower) the top of the slider switch gets hot. the higher the fan speed gets the hotter the switch gets. so it is NOT the slider switch or the wiring because it is different like I said. the A/C and all works great but I sure don't like the heat on the switch. I was wondering if maybe this is normal for this type of slider switch ? I took the old slider apart and inside is a big copper plate, the slider switch contacts it in different places for the different functions. no carbon wiper or anything just a big copper switch, so maybe all the slider switch's in our XJ's get hot just due to design. and unless I change some how to a different switch system like a separate switch for the fan and a on/off toggle switch for the A/C I think I will have to live knowing that when I run the A/C on high it will get hot. I would love your thoughts on this and any ideas you might have about this. lets try to solve the hot A/C switch problem so we can all benefit from it. thanks in advance and i hope to get some replies soon.
