Default '91 Base XJ Remote Starter Wiring... Easy?

No power locks/remote entry. No alarm system, or many other electronics to worry about. Found the wiring diagram on www.the12volt.com. Should be pretty easy, correct?

Thinking about buying one of those inexpensive DIY kits. Anyone do their own on a base?

Yup. Goto bulldogsecurity.com and chose your wiring diagram. Been using them for YEARS. I can install a remote start in about 10 minutes on an XJ now. Pull the knee panel from the lower dash and you will find all the wires needed for this. The RED and YELLOWs are along the steering column from the slider switch doo-dad. All the bulldog kits I get have a light tester that really saves time. I ALWAYS solder my wires together then tape and ziptie over the tape for good measure.

For a remote start, you need +12, Starter, Ignition 1, Blower Motor and tach (to tell the Remote Start that the engine is running).

Here is the wiring I used for my '92. This is for the XJ 1991 to 1993.

--> 12 VOLT CONSTANT RED (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
--> STARTER YELLOW/GREEN (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
STARTER 2 N/A
--> IGNITION 1 BLUE (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
IGNITION 2 N/A IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
IGNITION 3 N/A
--> ACCESSORY/HEATER BLOWER 1 PURPLE (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
ACCESSORY/HEATER BLOWER 2 N/A
KEYSENSE N/A
PARKING LIGHTS ( - ) N/A
--> PARKING LIGHTS ( + ) BLUE/RED (+) IN DRIVERS KICK PANEL
POWER LOCK ORANGE/VIOLET (TYPE A) IN DRIVERS KICK PANEL
POWER UNLOCK PINK/VIOLET (TYPE A) IN DRIVERS KICK PANEL LOCK MOTOR WIRE N/A
DOOR TRIGGER YELLOW (-) @ UNDERDASH LIGHT
DOMELIGHT SUPERVISION USE DOOR TRIGGER, Requires Part #775 Relay TRUNK RELEASE N/A SLIDING POWER DOOR N/A
HORN BLACK (-) @ RIBBON CABLE, IN THE STEERING COLUMN
--> TACH GRAY/BLUE @ PCM, See NOTE *1
WAIT TO START LIGHT N/A BRAKE WHITE (+) @ SWITCH ABOVE BRAKE PEDAL
FACTORY ALARM DISARM GREEN/ORANGE (-) IN DRIVER KICK PANEL ANTI-THEFT N/A

NOTES NOTE *1 the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is located on the LEFT Inner Fender behind the HEADLIGHT.

Thank you for the information. Does a wire need to be run from the PCM, back through the firewall to the remote start module?

We just did our new 96 last night. Did the bulldog. The only problem was finding the brake wire as the guys at the factory were tape happy and didn't leave it showing. Took less than 30 even with a sick kid bugging us.

Well, I can cross one more thing off the list of things I want to do to make a living.

Technically speaking it was not that difficult. There were just a few "#&*%$^ what were they thinking" moments. And some gymnastics trying to get myself and the tools into the right place to splice good connetions.

Locating and splicing into the gray/blue wire from the ECU was fun with it being conveniently located in the middle of about a 40-wire bundle. If I had to do it again it would take about 1/5th the time.

After about your 3rd one, you can really fly through them. Especially if it's a GM with the old VATS security system. I'm really good at bypassing that now.

Sorry to revive a dead thread. I’m installing this kit right now and am wondering if I have to splice into both of the red wires for continuous power or just one? Every time I turn my ignition on I’m blowing both fuses on the constant power wires. I’m a complete electrical noob. Bulldog phone support is non existent and I’ve searched a lot. TIA.

Was the lock/unlock positive or negative trigger?

I only connected the minimum required for remote start: constant, starter, ground, brake and accessories

So I’ve been fooling with this thing, had the ignition connector hooked up to the wrong blue wire, the remote start will now turn the electronics on, fuel pump starts but no crank. The diagram above shows the wire should be yellow/green for starter. I only have one wire that’s yellow and green (I’d say it’s green with a yellow stripe) and that does not seem to be the right one. I’ve tried using my Haynes with no luck. Please help I’m so close to getting this thing working in preparation for Michigan winters. TIA.
