Nothing more satisfying than when a simple fix does the job. Same results with my '87 though mine does not have the ballast resistor. That being said if the same problem crops up again I'd be suspicious of the fuel pump relay. Mine went bad with similar symptoms and tapping it with my knuckle got it working again for a day or two. After replacing it no more problems.
