89 xj wont start
It's an 89 xj 4.0 5 speed. It started fine I took it to a friends house went to leave turned the key it just clicked then buzzes. I figured it was the battery tried to jump it it slowly turned over so I gave it a min to charge then tried again bak to clicking. Now you turn the key the fuel pump primes all the gauges turn on turn the key further to start and u lose all power. The head lights won't turn on at all. Please help
So I cleaned everything tried starting it, it fired up. Shut it off and started it a few time took it down the road got bak shut it of and now it clicks a lot louder and faster but doesn't crank. Took the starter and soleniod out gonna go get it tested.

So to test with cylinoid on the Jeep cross (-+) at the starter cylinoid (large post with wires & small with wires) if it fires thwn cylinoid is the most likely suspect to your issue.

I agree with 944.0 that you could have a failing battery. Any parts store will LOAD TEST your battery for you for free. Take them up on it.

If you turn the key then loose power that can be a classic dirty battery connection. That thin grey oxidization might look OK, but is actually a good insulator. Shiny lead is a must. I use a pocket knife to get the crust off the inside, and a wire brush on the post. Not quite sure what thumper meant. Jumping power to the solonoid and having it start doesn't mean the solenoid is bad, and I only connect +, & -- on the fourth of July! Miscommunication I suppose, maybe the relay...but it clicks....
I got a new starter still clicked ended up taking the battery terminals apart cleaned all of it and cleaned the block ground really good and now it runs fine took down the road came bak no problems. Thanks for everyone's help

That one has got me good^. Push and turn that thing down on there. Looks good, feels good. Doesn't seem to make sense it can't contact. Glad you got'r! I'm on my third of fourth starter, it always nice to know it's good to go.

Lol ok so my Heep wouldn't start after work. Must have been all these no start threads jinxing me. A ball peen hammer against the solenoid served me well.
Glad you're up and running. Wanna give me your old starter since it's good? JK man.
