Default 89 xj overheating.

Okay so my gauge is telling my my jeep is running anywhere from 195 to 205. but the temperature in both radiator hoses are like 220 to 240, i thought the temp should be at least a 30 degree difference between the 2 radiator hoses, which means the coolant isnt staying in the radiator long enough to cool down, is this because i put a cheap thermostat in there?

195* to 205* is good. I assume you are using an IR thermometer to measure temps at the hoses. What readings are you getting at the thermostat housing and the sensor for the gauge?

Why are you concerned about radiator hose differential if operating temps are normal? Just curious.

I just noticed the title "overheating". Under what conditions is it overheating and at what temps?
