89 XJ Fuel Pump Problems
3 weeks ago I replaced the fuel pump and filter and now I'm having the same problem and am assuming I'll have to replace the pump again within the next few days. My questions are: 1) Is it another bad pump or not the right pump? 2) Is there something else causing the pump to go out? 3) What the heck should I do?
I really appreciate any and all responses
Thanks,
Nick

More details. You don't mention anything about what symptoms you have. The more information you include in your posts, the more accurate our replies can be.
Determining a fuel pump problem should be based on test data. For your 89, you should have 31 psi of fuel pressure at idle. Must be verified with a fuel pressure gauge installed on the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Then disconnect the vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator and the pressure should jump to approximately 39 psi.
The above test tells you a lot....Don't forget that along with the fuel pump and filter, the fuel pressure regulator is also in play here.
That being said, what brand of fuel pump replacement did you install? Stay away from Airtex like the plague; they have a terrible track record with efficiency and failures. I like Bosch; Carter are okay.
