Default 89 cherokee trans issue

Hi I'm new to the group and jeep scene.. I got an 89 2 door automatic with a 4.0 and it has a couple issues.. Mainly trying to figure out y I have to start in first gear to take off.. When I try to take off on drive it seems to be stuck in a high gear and will not down shift. I have to manually go thrust the gears every time I drive.. Verrrryyyy annoying as u could imagine. Any info will help and is much appreciated.

Very good possibility the fuse to your Transmission Control Unit is blown or corroded.

I'm thinking corrosion. Sometimes that's all it is and the fuse is fine.

You'll probably never have to deal with it again.
