Default 89 to 95 cherokee

i bought a 1995 jeep cherokee that was lightly rolled and has a rebuilt 4.0 ho and i would like to put everything into my 1989 4.0 non ho and get rid of the peugot electronics system in favor for the 95s computer and harness. is this going to be a big problem or is it a simple change over. also i'm going to dump the automatic for the ax-15 in the 95 but i have already looked that over and it doesnt look to dificult to do. any info on the engine swap would be great

thank you

It is no big deal as long as you use everything from the 95 including the exhaust as they are not the same, the 89 exhaust down. The other thing is depending on where you live it maybe hard to smog without being refereed. Here in ca it would have to be refereed before you could register it.

The 89s electronic control system is not Peugot, it is Renix which is short for Renault Bendix. Peugot only supplied some of the manual transmissions up to 89.

Probably. I would swap everything over related to the engine and electronics.

The Renix intakes do not flow properly with the H.O. heads due to a port design change on the H.O. head. You can get it to run without to many issues, but it will not be as fuel efficient or perform as well as it should. It would be better to swap the head over to the new engine during the install.

I had a 94 motor in my 87 with the H.O. head and Renix intake. We had it running decent but it never saw the street, or anything other than the driveway for that matter. The complete lack of brakes, non-working 4wd, and rusted out body wiped out all hope of ever finishing the project so it was stripped and acrapped. But it was running.

i do have the 95 harness and the computer i was just hoping to do the motor swap with out getting into the harness. my electrical skills arent that great and it looks like a big job pulling the whole thing out and putting it into the 89. i dont think its been cut at all from looking at it but i really havent had time to get into it. My plan was to do the engine and transmission swap this winter and get it ready for moab over easter break. My next question I have a 242 in the 89 and a 231 in the 95. I have heard good things on the 231 but i have a friend has the 242 in his jeep and swears by it. which transfer case is the stronger one.
