Default 88 xj

Ok so I am new to this forum but I will be getting an xj this weekend. My question is the one I am looking at is an 88 and has a v6 in it, what I can't figure out is why. I am in Canada and from what I can tell they stopped using the v6 in 86. did they continue in Canada for a couple of years or is there another v6 besides the 2.8l that it could be.

So your sure it is a V-6 not the inline 6? Have you actually seen it, or are you reading it out of an advertisement? Course it could be a motor swap, someone may have swapped a 4 cylinder for the 2.8. Or it could be a different v6 motor entirely. At least one member on here has swapped a 4.3 I believe.

no I have seen it and it is a v6 for sure. the owner doesn't know much about it, how can I check if it is a swap? would it be in the VIN?

The 2.8 is a 60 degree V and is a narrow motor. It came with the Chrysler 904 auto or the AX5 5 speed. The 4.3L is a 90 degree V and is much wider. The size difference is very noticeable.

None of the above V6 engines were stock in an 88 though. If it is an 88 it would have had an Inline 6 or a 4 banger.

I had a 2.8L Huge difference there. But to answer your question, the 4.3L has a little less torque, but is much faster off the line and winds up faster. I have a 4L60E tranny behind it which has a lower gear ratio in first gear, plus they come stock with a 1750 rpm stall converter. I can do 0-60 in about 100 yards.

The 93 I have is rated for 10 more hp than the 4.0L HO. Right now it is putting out somewhere in the neighborhood of 230 hp, which is a conservative number.

I found a VIN decoder just waiting to hear what the VIN is for the xj. I think it is a 2.8l it is a fairly small engine. This is a trade for an older bike that I have so don't much care. it will be a DD for awhile and won't get many upgrades so the 2.8l will be ok for now. Thanks for the replies, I will update when I know more about the engine
