Just bought an 88 Cherokee with the 4.0 manual transmission. Motor runs great in idle and also accelerates great. But once I start to drive it, motor bogs down and shuts down. Sometimes it will start right away sometimes it will take a long time. I put the jeep with all four tires in the air, and it runs great. Accelerates and changes gears with no problem. Got it up to 70 mph without a hitch. Any suggestions? I'm lost.

Replace the plugs with NGKs, replace the plug wires and cap and rotor.

I'd be looking for a plugged fuel filter, or a problem with the fuel pressure regulator, or some such.

I once bought a car that would run fine for some variable time, and then just shut down. It turned out that someone had stuffed a bunch of junk mail in the gas tank, car would run nicely until some random envelope floated over the fuel pickup..

Remember, the PO was probably the Devil incarnate..
