Default '88 Cherokee Start-Up Issues

Hello everyone!

I've come here because I'm desperate. I just within the last year bought an 88 Cherokee as my main mode of transportation. It hasn't given me a single problem until the last few months.

The problem is every now and then, in any kind of weather, you'll turn the ignition switch and the engine will just turn over and over and over. The car just will not start when this happens. I've left it over-night a few times when this has gone on, just to find it starts easily the next day.

We've troubleshot a few things, but I'm starting to feel like the mechanics are leading me around. I'm on top of the oil and gas so those are never an issue. Other things have also been replaced since this issue sprang up, they are as follows:

-neutral safety switch
-fuel filter was just changed.
-water pump
-exhaust manifold gasket
-the muffler

Could it be the spark plugs? This is what I've had my finger on since day one but I keep getting a bunch of "no no no, couldn't be that". I'm just honestly over it, it seems simple enough to fix and yet it hasn't been. Once again, I'm starting to feel like I'm getting taken for a ride.

If you have any ideas for me, or a similar experience you've encountered, please share.

Test the CPS or crank position sensor.

Check for spark when it won't start. I'm guessing what he said ^^

PinkNBlack21,
I'm having the same problem with my 1989 jeep cherokee Pioneer but I narrow it down to a fuel problem and I think you should try the same. When it doesn't start losen the clamp on the large 3" hose or duct work from the air filter box. Squirt some starting fluid into it and try to start your jeep. If it starts at least you will know it's a fuel problem. This only takes a few minutes. This work for me but I'm still trying to find out why. Mike37 gave me some great advice to check the fuel regulator and fuel pump in which I try to check tomorrow.
