I have no vacuum lines running from the egr solenoid to the vacuum fitting, and there is also no vacuum line going from the solenoid to the egr valve.

Lack of vacuum to EGR will not cause it to open and give you a vacuum leak at idle.
Have you traced the intake manifold vacuum source to wherever it's going now?

I'm just like you, 88 with a np242.
I had some bad bulbs in my message center and when I replaced them I got my part time light and full time lights back.
Have you checked to see if you got bad bulbs?
And also, I would take cruisers advice and buy both of the vac harnesses.
One more thing to look at, I had a wavering rpm at idle once and it turned out to be a bad o2 sensor(Dflinstone will back me up on this as he had the same thing)
Good luck man

And yes, a functioning EGR valve needs vacuum to let exhaust into the intake manifold. If it's stuck, or otherwise failed it could be a potential vacuum leak. No Idea how often that happens. It does deal with exhaust gas and whatever else is coming out the exhaust. Just one more place for a potential leak.....
