Default 88 cherokee auto wont reverse unless in 4l

I have an 88 Cherokee xj with a 4.5 lift and 33s has 4.0 and auto trans with 231 tcase. It decided yesterday after backing up a little hill it stopped going like slipping. Now it won't go anywhere in 2 or 4 high but will in 4 low only at idle speed if I hit the gas it slips. Could it be something in the trans or in the transfer case. I was thinking transfer case cuz it moves in 4 low and if it was the trans I don't see how putting it in 4 low would make a difference. All other gears work in 2 or 4

It makes a difference because of the gear ratio in 4Lo. It's like revving the engine alot higher. What does the trans fluid look like (level and condition)?

Honestly, I'm not too familiar with this trans. Hopefully someone else chimes in. I'm not sure what would only affect reverse and not the forward gears.

Are all the trans mounting bolts tight? Loose ones can cause this

OK I had no idea that loose bolts could do it cuz I found out today that the mount under the transfer case is not bolted to the case. So the end moves around but I didn't think that could cause it at all. How does it cause it

Well i drained the trans and tcase today first the tcase only had like a quart of fluid in it. But no metal shavings that I see. The trans is an aw4 the magnets did have a layer of black stuff on them not sure if its alot or not I scraped it off with my finger and got a glob of it
