not sure but I do know you have basically two options
AX 15(good)
or
BA 10(bad)
I dont think the AX 5(bad) went in the XJ
You should be able to find some pics and compare.

No,the 91 will be an ax-15 if you have a 4.0. 88s were either the ba/10 or ax-5 depending on setup,also the 91 is 23 splined and the 88 is 21.

i will crawl under there tomorrow.. I have an 88. I am thinking of buying a 91 donor. My 5 speed is fine but this 91 truck is a heck of a deal just has a bad engine.. so... if 'abovetimberline' is right it would probably not be worth my time to do the swap?

It is worth your time,I assume the donor is 4wheel drive also? if so you have the transfer case you need,the ax-15 will bolt up to your engine just fine,difference is is the trany you have is 21 spline and the ax=15 is 23. but you have the transfer case from the 91. You can change the input shafts also.
If it was me I would change trany and xfercase from 91,the ax-15 is worth it.

yea the donor is 4x4... it is comming out of a 91 xj cheorkee into my 88 mj comanche... what about drive shaft? I think i am going to go buy that 91 tomorrow if the dude still has it. Thanks timberline for the insight.
