That's great, but I wonder if it could be a problem with the ballast rather than the fuel pump itself?

 

You test them in a static condition.

TPS tests OK.......so, you rule it out. Yet, hesitation remains, shifts erratic....etc....

I'd go with symptoms.

 

I jumped the ballast with a 25A fuse. No change. Just dropped the tank. Very rusty and gunky. Any tips on cleaning out a fuel tank?

 

Check and see what brand of pump you have now. I put in a Carter and it only lasted a few months. I put a Bosch in and it's been great for two years now. A new tank isn't too pricy on Rock auto if you have the money. Getting the pump out is easy but you'll buy new lock ring and lock ring seal and have a time getting that all back on. Buy a fuel filter as well as some new fuel hoses while you have it all off. Checking pressure at the fuel rail is a must with these Jeeps. A good investment.

 

It has a Bosch now. Im sure it wasn't the pumps fault. The fuel tank is very rusty and corroded. I do plan on putting a new filter and hoses in while I have everything out. Going to check the boneyard tomorrow to see if they have any decent tanks. If not I will order a new one.

Less than $100 for a 13.5 gallon tank and $70 for a Bosch fuel pump on Rock Auto-Why mess around with a junkyard tank. If you buy new, it will be the last one you ever put on plus you won't have the other rusty spots to fight with to get your new hardware on. The strap bolts are hard to find. I made my own with some really long eye bolts. Good luck.

 

It was going to take 4 days to get a new tank in so I found one at the junkyard for $10 that was spotless inside. Cleaned up a couple rust spots on the outside and primered and painted it. Got straps and bolts with it too.

Ended up with a Delphi pump from Autozone. Not sure about their durability but for $75 and a lifetime warranty I'll take my chances. It is noticeably quieter than the Bosch and I'm getting good pressure.

 

Glad it worked out. You were probably just getting used to the noise your fuel pump was making as it was starting to go. You should just be able to hear it prime normally. If you start to notice the noise getting louder more and more, that's usually when it's dying. Don't run the tank to empty either with these. That's a sure way to get the junk in the pump.

Also good to have a fuel pressure gauge available with these Jeeps as things can go from bad to worse pretty quick.
