Default 87-95 cam in 96+ computer XJ

I've got a 2001 XJ that I'm rebuilding an engine for. I'm using a 96 block so the cam must be the washer, pin and spring design. Im going to order an oem replacement cam. The intake and exhaust lift and lift duration is the same on the 87-95 cam. It is offset on the 96+ cam. Will the computer just learn the setup of the older style cam profile if I use it or will it run poorly?

Yes, you will be fine. There will be no issues using that cam.

Thank you. I was leaning towards it working but was hoping for some confirmation

Why not rebuild your '01 block and use a cam with the cam retainer plate?

The 01 is still running and in the XJ. Discovered the cracked head and couldn't afford to be down a vehicle so I've just babied it until i could get another engine ready. I bought a complete "running" 4.0 from a 96 XJ but with this being a daily driver I wanted to rebuild it.
