I own a 86' 2.8v6 5 speed. 4x4
I took the Jeep into a shop after the gears were grinding while shifting prior to taking it there I drained the fluid and checked everything just making sure it wasn't a simple fix.
the next day l drove it to the shop and stopped halfway for about 30min just so it could cool off so I wasn't stressing it to much.
it then became impossible to shift into 3rd (I think) . I called a friend and had it towed the rest of the way.
the Guy at the shop said it was the scryncos in the transmission and the best thing to do was get another and swap it. he would charge $400
you think this is correct? is $400 a fair price? I have found another transmission rebuilt for $500.
is this the right thing to do?
thank you

I have pulled the old one out myself.
I guess now I would have to find another transmission.
the shop I went to only does AMC and Jeep stuff.
They have a rebuilt AX5 for $500 with 100 day warranty.
another place has one with 120k for $300.
the shop said they would put a new one in and bleed the clutch for $400.
should I ask about resurface the fly wheel?
what's my best options here.
I no longer have the time to install the new one my self.

Resurfaced flywheel and new clutch is always a good idea since the trans is out unless the clutch looks basically new. I guess your in a tough place if you dont have the time to do it yourself. If you lived near me I would install the trans for $300! lol

Since no one really answered your question so far. I would say if you don't have time to do it yourself. $400 is a good deal. But I would ask them what kind of warranty that they are giving you on the used trans and if it would include the resurfacing and a new clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. since it going to be apart you may as well get it all changed out.

I called them. and they said the only extra would be parts/fluids. and $50 extra to resurface
the clutch looks brand new.
ill order a pressure plate and throwout bearing tho.
thanks for your help guys.
wish I had the time to mess with it and learn how to do it. I'm working 12 hours a day 7 days a week. from 6am to 6pm....
hopefully things will break when I have some free time...
