Default 86 Cherokee Failed CA Smog - Need Vac Help

Hello everyone, just bought my 86 Cherokee Chief a little over 2 weeks ago. I think it was in storage for a few years but 2 weeks of working on it and already it's running much smoother.

Smog tested it before doing much work on it. Needless to say, it failed. Here's the numbers:

HC(ppm)

MAX-15mph - 119
MEAS-15mph - 162

MAX-25mph - 79
MEAS-25mph - 154

NO(ppm)

MAX-15mph - 767
MEAS-15mph - 2965

MAX-25mph - 798
MEAS-25mph - 2443

Getting ready to give it a second shot after getting these last few vac lines connected. Engine is 2.8L v6, 5-speed manual trans. Will leave pictures of the disconnected lines in the post below.

Other than vac line connections, have also replaced the spark plug wires and checked the spark plugs. Going to replace the EGR. Running premium fuel til the test, will Seafoam it a few days before the test. If it fails again, I'll replace the cat. Any other ideas?

Here's the pictures of the disconnected vac lines / parts. Can't seem to find where these last few things are supposed to connect. Any ideas?

No idea where this goes to.

Pipe is on trans case.

I'm guessing these get connected together?

Well found out the white T piece connects to that black part, if it is the vac switch assembly which I'm pretty sure it is. That solves the last three pictures.

Still need help on the first three pictures though. Anyone have any ideas on what that blue line with the black circle piece on the end is? Or even any idea where it would lead to or what section of the repair manual I should look in? Also the hollow metal pipe on top of the transmission in the third picture. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with seafoam or any additives. I for sure saw the Chevron Premium with Techton help an issue I had. I would run just that. In a perfect world, the muffler shop would be across the street from the smog shop. What I mean is sooner the better there. Smog can be a real bear, no point in putting any extra miles on the new cat before going in. Good luck!

Trannys, transfer cases, diffs, all have vents. Usually a tube runs up say dipstick height, and the end has a little filter.

Cool, thanks for the info on the trans pipe. No filter on the end, I'll have to do a bit more research, but good to know that it's not that important, hopefully.

Good news on the blue line, pretty sure it is just supposed to hang like that, connected to nothing. Found another thread saying it's a vent tube with a check valve.

If anyone has anymore info on the pipe on the trans that'd be great, but not going to worry about it too much.

Now I just need to wait for the Air Injection Pipe Set, and Exhaust Check Valves to get here, install 'em and the new EGR valve and then off to the retest. Hopefully I won't need a new cat and a 3rd test. I'll let you all know how it goes.

EDIT: I do have a leaking transmission, or atleast it was 1 qt low when I first checked everything. Could that pipe be part of it? Maybe more important that I thought.

the blue vent line i have that too on my xj 88, its just hanging there believe it comes from the transfercase (np231) vacuum switch and was intended for a different transfercase model with an electronic part connected to it is what i read on a forum.

So looks like I need an "R Delay." Or atleast thats what it's called on the vacuum diagram under the hood and same as the one posted earlier in this thread. I need the one next to the Vac Switch Assy if it makes a difference.

Can't seem to see the part listed anywhere. Can anyone help me find what it is / where I can buy it?
