Default 84 xj 4.0 swap to a 6

Has anyone swaped out there 4 banger for a 6? I have a 1984 xj 2door. Its been sitting for like 10 months when i was in iraq... .Just looking for some info on what would be needed.. and if anyone has had a 4.0 if they have trail tested them yet. I use to have a 89 xj, she ran great with a straight 6, never got stuck once. Thanks in advanced..

Look on page 4 there is a post there on swapping a 2.5 to 4.0,see what these folks have to say,I can tell you it is very possible but will require all the wiring and brains from the 4.0,at minumum.

The first generation of XJs (4 and V6 models), have an engine bay that is too short for the long straight six. In 1987, they extended the front and modified the firewall to make room for the new 4.0. Unfortunately, it's MUCH cheaper to just sell the 4 banger and get a post 1987 model with the 4.0 already in it. The amount of fabrication, time and materials to do such a conversion is far outweiged by just getting another XJ.

I had the same issue with my 1984 2.5L. I had tweaked the motor for all it was worth (head work, exhaust, electric fans, Accel Ignition, etc and it still was unable to keep the tires clear when mudding. Found my current 1992 4.0 HO 4x4 on Craigslist for $200 and sold my 1984 for a bit more.

Sell the 2.5 and get another one.
