Default 8.8 swap question

my question is whether its better to have the shock tab to be point strait up or to be pointed at an angle. the 8.8 is going under an XJ with 5" of lift. is there going to be a advantage to having the tab put straight up?

thanx

you need to turn the mounts 90 degrees or the shocks will limit your flex. but if i had to do it that way i would have them on top as long as it didn't inter-fear with anything.

I am assuming you are welding on shock mounts?

From what I can see here, you are going to run the shocks vertically instead of at an angle like stock. So there are a couple of considerations here that need to be addressed. First, are you going up through the floor with the top of the shock? The reason the rears are angled is so they don't have to. Second, how much travel do you anticipate having? The flexier you are, the longer the shock will have to be and you may end up mounting them lower than the tube like on the stock axle. Third, the reason the stock shocks are mounted on both sides of the axle is to HELP, but not limit entirely axle wrap. If you are running a linked set up, this is not a consideration. But with leaf springs it can be, especially with soft springs.

1. im am not running the shock up through the floor.
2. for travel im going to want a bit but not too much, the tabs will be welded under 5" of lift w/ leaf springs
3. i might weld them at the opposed angle as the stock shocks are mounted, just to not mess around with angles or shock lengths.

I would suggest then that you are using the wrong tabs. Your pivot is 90° off. You will want to run a similar set up to the one on the stock axle then if you are going to use the stock location for the top shock mount, which you will have to do. You can use the same type of mount. The top shock mount of a Chevy K10 and 15 (4WD pickup) has a removable bolt on stud mount you can use and then just weld a box on the axle just under the leaf spring for it. You can position it like this.
