33s+ is where I'd be concerned driving like that. But if you dont drive like an idiot you could easily run 35s on a 8.25 without issue.
Run the thing through the right pot hole at just the right speed the axel will snap. Hit a curb just right the axel will break. Lift a wheel unlocked, drop that spinning wheel to the ground the axel snaps. It is POSSIBBLE to snap an axel just driving down the street, un-likely, yes. Don't matter what axel you have or the size of your tires, the above is a fact. Now should I list the ways when ROCKS are involved.

8.25 is fine for up to about a 35" tire. Beyond that gearing is more an issue than strength.

this might be a dumb question, but how common are the 2 different rear axles? should i be looking for something specific when looking at cherokees to tell which one it has?

i'm looking to buy my first xj within the next couple weeks and would really rather stay away from the d35 if i can help it, based on what you all are sayin.

thanks.

The 8.25 and d35 arent really tooo too much different in strength wise but the 8.25 is stronger if u could find a good deal with one that has a d35 id take it but if both are the same price id def go with the 8.25 but in my eyes it shouldnt be a deal breaker

Found this pic and its a good example of axle shapes, u want to look for the bottom of the axle the d35 is rounded where the 8.25 is flat
