5 speed tranny problems
I recently lifted my 88 xj 4.5 inches and since I've done that it won't shift into 2nd gear, and it slips out of reverse if I put any sort of power into it. I don't have an SYE yet. Is that the only problem or do I need something else?
Ok sorry. No it's a 5 speed manual. And it won't shift to 2nd gear. It'll go into reverse, but if I give it some gas in reverse, it makes a nasty grinding sound and slips out. Also, in 4wd, I can't go much faster than about 7 mph. What I'm wondering, is if this is all caused by my lack of an SYE, or if there's a bigger issue I'm unaware of.

Lifting past 3in is about the limit of an XJ driveline. You "will" need an SYE and driveline mod front? and back.
You are kicking out of gear and your speed is restricted most likely due to driveline bind on the slipyolk and driveshaft.
Not sure on the 2nd gear thing, but if it wasn't doing it before the lift then it is all related.
Also do you have an AX-15 or the Peugeot?, if the latter start looking for an AX-15.

Okay. Lack of an SYE isn't doing that.
So you can't get it into second gear, so in 4WD you can't make it run faster than 7 MPH because you're in 1st gear? How is this different from 2WD?
Is there fluid in this thing? Clutch working?

What I've been doing is shifting straight from 1st to 3rd gear. That works in 2wd, but in 4wd I can't go any faster than about 7 mph. It's not that I'm not shifting out of 1st gear, it's that I can't go fast enough to shift out of gear.
