Default 4x4 will only engage/disengage when transmission is in neutral

I finally got my project XJ to start up yesterday so I took it for a spin the only thing I noticed is that it won't go into any 4x4 mode unless the vehicle is In neutral same with coming out of 4x4 unless there is some special thing that I don't know about this is my first XJ and actually my first jeep. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a 98 but I would think they'd be the same. I'm pretty sure you are supposed to put in in neutral before you engage or disengage the 4 wheel drive, at least that's what my dad was told when he bought it from the dealership

Same for me. I can get into 4hi while moving i usually dont do it over 10 but if im at a stand still i might have to move a little to get it into 4hi but other times it will still go in so try and see if its only at a complete stop and in drive that it doesnt go into 4hi. 4low requires neutral for me

you should be able to put her in 4hi on the fly. Help me out here guys, but i think the threshold is like 35mph. 4 low you need to be at a stop in N.

I read that you need to be going less than 55MPH to put it into 4HI part time on the 231. To go to 4LO, I have to basically stop, put it in neutral and let it start to roll before it engages.

it should be shift on the fly for 4H I've done it doing 50 mph with no problems.
Now 4L you have to put the tranny into neutral at a crawl or stop to shift through the transfer case neutral into 4L.
Same going from 4L back to 4H

What t/case have you got?
On the 242 I found it is very sensitive to the tyres all having the same diameter. With matching tyres and equal pressures it'll shift happily in/out of 4 FT on the move but you're meant to be stopped or crawling for 4 LO.
