Default 4x4 shifting problem !!

2000 jeep cherokee xj with a 6 inch lift.....if you try to put the jeep in 4x4 you can shift it in 4high but it dont fit snug and no light will come on, if you try to go past 4hi and pull real hard on the level its like its stuck..you can pull real hard and the indicator light will come on in the dash, but it wont go past 4 hi. 4 hi will work but the lever isnt snug in place and it wont stay in it.

could the shift forks in the transfer case be out of place ?

any suggestions would be great. thanks !

Shift linklage. There's just a little bolt on the arm linkage, think its half inch socket. push the lever all the way to 2wd then loosen the bolt, push the lever further into 2wd, tighten bolt...done.

also if you want it to stay in 4hi you have to hold the lever up the whole time or it will come back in two wheel drive...sounds like i need to adjust on the linkage and a shift fork is bent in the t case.

you do know that the shifter has to move to one side slightly to get to N and 4low? the stop is there to prevent you from doing bad things while moving. i would get under there and check the adjustment on the linkage as well.

Yeah i know it has the stop i have had a couple of these things..... we tried prying around on the linkage and all that and clicking it in manual under the jeep.
When you go to pull it down in to N or Low it dont go past the 4hi mark, you can tell somthing is in a bind and stopping it.

Dumb question but are you rolling slowly while shifting?

6" lift. Transfer case drop? if there is, then the linkage is probably binding. The only real cure is to redo the linkage or get rid of the tcase drop.

That's it. That will cause the linkage to bind. You will have to try to adjust it or rework it to move it back in alignment.
