I was Service Manager and Shop Foreman at a 5 star Jeep dealer for 13 years.
Your assesment of the 242's operation is totally wrong as is your advice on shifting the 231.

Speed was not the cause. It was designed to be shifted from 2H to 4H and back again at "any legal speed".
I've done it at 80MPH more than once.

hey since you worked at jeep can you tell me why when I shift out of 4H to 2H the part time light stays on for a while and then begins to flicker and sometimes I have to pull the lever into 4H-2H a few quick times to get the light to go off even then the part time light flickers then goes off.

Commonly the cause of this is sloppy linkage, like from worn bushings or it just needs to be adjusted and greased. The switch on the transfer case reads the position of the shift fork inside the unit, so it accurately reflects the position that the transfer case is in. A lack of lubrication could also cause this but you'd notice quite a bit of noise.

I was driving home from work last winter and couldn't remeber what my owners manual said to do. I keep the manual in my house.
So i slowed down to 45mph and put it in N then shifted to 4hi then back to drive. But 80mph???? I wouldn't want to attempt it...

Any legal speed. I think the speed limit in Nevada at that time was "prima facia", whatever was deemed safe. We were in Arizona so that was close enough for us. I initially did it with a factory service rep in the Jeep with me, on a dare.

ok well I do this but doesnt help and jw any chance it could be the disco on the axle because from what I understood the Renix era Cherokees it was the disco shift fork that made the part time light come on and off

It's the VACUUM to the shift fork that turned the light on via a vacuum switch located on teh passenger side firewall. Blue deally with a wire on it and a vac line and dump valve.
