Default 4x4 not engaging

any information on why the non-vacuum 1992+ Selec Trac system may not engage into any 4x4 option?

what happens in the transfer case to 'lock' the front driveshaft into a drive position?... as the front diff is always engaged.

I can put mine into 4-Lo with all 4 wheels off the ground, and stop the bront hubs from turning with my hands.

Attempting to tow something on slippery ground in 4-Low reveals that only the Right-Rear wheel spins...

help!!

old post... but still valid question...

Try changing the diff and transfer case fluids... helped mine. then proceed to beat the snot out of it. maybe transfercase isn't grabbing the right spot, or some electronic issue? sold my heep a year ago... adios XJ!!!
