Search for threads on 4x4 swich, there are a few threads here that talked about a switch on the transfer case, that others have removed and cleaned the contacts to get the lights to work. It seems to be fairly common. Mine has been off for 5 or more years now and I just go by the feel. One of these years I will finally locate that switch and check to see if it needs replaced. Since I need to replace some metal under the floor boards when it warms up, I will finally look into it.
I sure others can give you the information you need.

At the top drivers side of the T-Case there is a bolt in 2 wire plug (unless yours is vacuum) just unplug it and then unbolt it to remove.
Get a new transfer case indicator switch at the auto parts store and install it. Make sure to get a new indicator switch o-ring as well. There are two types electrical and vacuum.
I know those are awful instructions but hope they help.

Well because of the knee deep snow here i never did look at it but when i kicked into 4hi to back out of the driveway this morning they came on. Got on the freeway and put it back into 2wd. Got off the freeway 20 minutes later and they wouldnt come back on when i had to go back into 4hi.

If you FEEL your XJ jump to life and through you in the seat with instant throttle response and no tires spinning and top out at 35mph, you're in 4LO.
4HI is the other one that rarely gets used...
I never knew this light existed until today. Huh, I've always just felt it, or recently just listen.
Not worth $50, might try to fix it this summer by cleaning myself!
