Default 4X4 ISSUES

I was checking the 4wd on my 1992 XJ and found that my 4wd only engages in part time. If I put it in Full Time the indicator light comes on but the 4wd never engages. I have heard that it is all driven by vacuum lines, could that be the problem? Not sure where to start to check this problem. Any help would be appreciated!

Don't think there are any vacuum lines on the '92 related to 4wd. Could be wrong though.

Probably need to adjust the shift linkage. Just curious, how do you know 4wd isn't engaging?

well i engaged the 4wd in a parking lot and made a hard left and right turn, you can feel it grabbing. (Something we do at the dealership when we appraise cars) I can feel it grabbing when engaged in part time, but nothing when in full time.

Well, yeah, the full-time mode will allow the axles to 'slip' at different speeds. Unless it's got a locker in it, it won't drive differently in 4wd full-time. You need to jack it up on all 4s and put it in 4wd, or take it somewhere with loose gravel, and check that way.

X2 on the graval/sand/jack its the only REAL way to be sure...Tj
PS there are absolutely no vacuum lines on jeep TCases, they are all manual linkage.

Be careful driving it in 4 wheel right now...
If the linkage is somehow off, you might actually be in full-time and not parttime, reguardless of what the light says.

Kind of like when the linkage gets out of whack in a regular shifter, and your little picture says you are in neutral when you are actually in drive or reverse. (all the little letters are shifted off by one slot)

I'd just HAATE to see you burn something out. Driving in fulltime on regular roads for anby length of time can really cause you some issues.

Good-luck, have fun.

huh? Fulltime is good for all conditions, part time is for loose/slick conditions only, hence the reason it's hard to tell if fulltime is working or not, parttime will and should bind on dry hard surfaces, fulltime shouldn't (or at least much)

Sorry, strike that, reverse it.
I'm just preaching caution while driving in 4. I'd hate to see problems occur.
