When changing back to 2 wheel drive from 4x4 it always doesn't go in right away. It goes into gear fine however At times, I'll be driving and I will hear a bang noise and it then goes back to 2 wheel drive. Any ideas ?

Shift it like this and your problem will go away:
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

That bang you hear/feel is the transfer case slamming back into 2H...not good. Take your rig out and practice getting it right before you break your chain.

?
You can shift from 2Hi to 4Hi and back to 2Hi running 60 mph down the road...
You need to be in neutral to shift to 4-LO.
Exactly how Cruisers instructions say.

XJ's with SELECTRAC with full time 4wd can drive on pavement with 4x4 no harm.

If you can't drive on pavement with it 4wd then why would you shift into 4wd while on pavement?
Just be in the dirt when you shift and you won't have to worry about it.
