Some thing has bent the linkage over too far it needs to be bent back enough to clear that bolt and leave 1/4"-1/2" of clearance IIRC.

Well it looks that way from your pics. Can't really be sure but that "little screw" is a seatbelt bolt IIRC so it has always been there and those rods have to pass that bolt so yes, something has changed and the bolt has not moved.

When I bought my XJ I had a similar problem and spent all afternoon fiddling with the adjustment on the linkage but nothing seemed to help. After my wife got home from work I had her sit in the Jeep and pull on the selector lever while I had a look from underneath.
Turned out that the linkage was worn and the small bushing that keeps it running back and forward in a straight line was perished and as a result it was twisting just enough to get caught on that same bolt thread in your picture.

Excellent suggestion Red. A second person could be very helpful in the diagnosis of the problem. I had assumed that you already inspected the bushings and had confirmed the adjustment, but if not, by all means a second person for the top side while you check underneath.

yea, i've done all that, and even moved the bar out of the way, but nothing seems to help. I did some research on google, and theres a little plastic piece that can break, and keep your truck from staying in 4 wheel low.
not exactly sure where it is tho.

would some clear pictures of all that stuff help you guys help me?

it stumps me tho, because 4wh works great and 4wl works if i pry the selector lever all the way up.

Might be a stupid question but, have you tried adjusting the selector bar underneath?
