Exclamation 4WD Problems

Alright so I got my 94 XJ and whenever I go 'jeepin' and I run into a rough

spot, when I put the Jeep into 4WD it runs but every couple seconds it

makes a sort of knocking noise, like the gear isn't catching or something.

Any ideas on what it is or how to fix it?
Thanks

Sounds like your chain may be stretched and slipping. You may be dropping the t-case in the very near future.

Oh and on your profile, you have the Inline 6, not a V6

Does it do it if your on level, not rough ground, like a road in 4x4? Could be that your tcase linkage needs adjusting, trans mount or ujoints. hard to tell from your info.

Yea, we got back to the road and put it in 4wd and it did the same thing, and when I tried to turn it would kinda grind and sound like the tires were catching something because they would shake. What other info would you need? I'll try to get it

I'm assuming you have a np242 and you were in full time 4x4 while trying to make a u turn on the road?

Was talking with a guy last month who was wondering about his chain. A have a spare T-C in my barn, so I measured the rotational free play at the front output there. I measured at a 3-3/4 inch like, flange there. Exactly 5/16 is what it has there, turning it back and forth. Later he got, or checked another one and said there was zero, no play in it at all. So there's that!
The next time I have my front drive line off, maybe I'll check mine.

"and when I tried to turn it would kinda grind and sound like the tires were catching something"

Mine would make clacking noise and feel "like the tires were catch or something", with bad U-joints on the front axle(s). No doubt on that one!

I was actually just turning to make a left hand turn and it was making the noise. I was in Part time, and after reading up on the difference between the two, I know that the part time was the cause of the bumping and shaking on the pavement so thanks for helping with that.

I guess I just have to get inside the tcase to figure out why the 4wd is acting up off road?

So I got under my Jeep and cleaned the tcase off and found out its a 231. Its also leaking and since I've cleaned it I cant really tell where the leak was coming from anymore.
I'll be taking it apart today and replacing all the seals, hopefully it'll help. Any idea on how long it should take me???
