Default 4wd problem

hi i posted about this a while ago when i first got my xj and got more info now. ok when i put the transfer case in 4wd and move there is a loud bang every few feet but also whenever any torque is required from the front wheels there is a loud noise like two gears slipping past each other. there is also no drive whatsoever from the front wheels. has anyone any ideas what this could be. a friend thought it could be the chain in the transfer case that has snapped. cant open it up till this weekend because of work just wanting some theories for now.

A bang every few feet or when applying power in 4WD, sounds like the chain is slipping inside the transfer case, to me.

Just get your temp. sensor at Autozone, Schmucks or whatever your closest "chain type" auto parts store is. That is one of those consumable type of parts that is the same at any store as far as quality. Just try to find the best price.

thats it when im moving steady (not too fast as the noises scare me ) there is a repetative clunk then when wanting power it sounds like the gear box does if its not in gear properly so would that be a new chain? just drop it off and fit new?

I forgot you also mentioned the gear on gear grinding noise. It just sounds to me like you have some serious issues going on inside your transfer case. I think once you open it up you will find that it needs more than just a new chain. It's probably ready for a complete rebuild judging by the many noises you're hearing. I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I'd look for a good donor TC from a Jeep in a JY. Probably cheaper than a rebuild and much quicker to get back on the road, too.

If you get a big ticket item like a TC from a JY and they won't give you a warranty. Tell them they can keep it and go to he next JY down the road. Word of mouth is how those guys stay in business. If they try to Rook you then they are pretty stupid.

I've heard of guys getting good used ones for $100 - $200. Have cash, you might even get it for cheaper than a Franklin.

Almost forgot. Bring your old TC for partial trade. Most JY these days are in the scrap metal business, too. A trashed TC is one heavy piece of scrap metal to bargain with.
