4WD issue
hey guys, I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with command-trac (part time system). It seems like my 4H doesn't work. 4L works fine and all tires spin. When in 4H only the rears spin. Also my part-time indicator light isn't working. Any idea if these problems have a similar cause or what it could be?
Thanks

Bad engine mounts and trans mount can cause these issues. Are you shifting like the factory intended?
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in ITALICS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
To shift out of 4L, shift the transmission into neutral with the vehicle stopped, shift the transfer case lever to 2H, then to D if you have an automatic, or into first gear with a manual, and continue on.

I do all my shifting in neutral on a level surface if possible. maybe roll forward or backward a bit if it seems hasty to shift but back into neutral. 4hi should work while driving though, just scares me / doesn't seem worth the risk to shift while moving.

Its no risk. Its meant to shift on the fly. I've shifted doing 50. just let off the gas, shift and gas back up. Done. Best invention ever.

Your issue is a little different. Both of my Jeeps have issues with 4 Low due to mount and linkage issues.
So both positions, 4WD high part-time, and 4WD high full-time, drive only the rears, but 4 low works, except for the light.
I suppose in your shoes I might go at figuring out why the light isn't working and see if that sheds any light on the 4 WD issue, and check the fluid.
I just got skunked. Spent a while looking and all I found is that maybe there are two switches.
I'm curious. Is the Jeep new to you, or was 4 High working, then quit?
