Default 4wd engaged no dash indicator

I tried to shift in and out of 4wd with no part time indicator coming on or off. Still seems to be in 4wd though. Already tried backing up to get it to drop out and shifting between 4wd options with no luck. Any ideas?

Over the winter my part-time indicator light would be flaky and sometimes not show up. I was most definitely in 4wd when shifted since without it I wouldn't have been able to get out of the ice covered driveway in 2wd. The last few times I've engaged it, the light will come on. If I get around to it I'll crawl under and look for what I expect is just a loose wire/bad connection on the transfer case electronics.
You could simply have a bad bulb in the cluster or an issue with the sensor/wiring on the xfer case that activates the light.

try a gauge diagnostic check if it doesn't illuminate, the bulb in the cluster is probably out. if it does flash during the check then check your connections to the transfer case

My light went out in 2003. It's on the To-Do List.

Here’s how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I’ve been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner’s manual. The suggestions in BOLD are mine.

“To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed”. I let off the gas, throw the lever, tap the gas, and let off again.

4L position: ” To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L”.

To shift out of 4L, stop the vehicle, shift the transmission to Neutral, shift the transfer case lever to 4H, then the transmission to Drive (if you have an automatic), or First gear (if you have a manual), and continue on.
