Actually, my 67 Nisssan Patrol would "shift on the fly" just like most other 4X4s I've owned. 67 Bronco, FJ40. If the hubs are already engaged, and you're driving at speed, just shift it into 4wd.

The fact that both driveshafts are turning the same speed allows the shift to be made seamlessly.

Turns out PO had slightly larger tires in the rear. Now they are all the same and everything works perfectly, even on the fly.
